Rough Terrain Forklift

Rough terrain forklifts are the ones that handle the biggest jobs. These aren't the ones you see in warehouses, moving and lifting pallets of supplies. Businesses invest in these substantial forklifts because their work is done outside (often over rough terrain, as the name suggests!) and they require a great deal of heavy lifting.

You see rough terrain forklifts in lumberyards, at construction sites, and in major landscaping operations. There are two major characteristics which make these models perfect for these uses. First of all, rough terrain forklifts are almost exclusively powered by internal combustion (IC) engines. Diesel-powered models, in particular, are equipped to handle the largest loads and accelerate to higher speeds.

The other distinguishing characteristic that marks rough terrain forklifts is the use of pneumatic (air-filled) tires. Unavailable on many indoor forklift models, pneumatic tires provide the durability and traction that is needed for outdoor use on uneven ground. For especially rocky areas, or those that might contain pieces of glass or metal, there are also solid pneumatic tires available (a misnomer, since these tires actually do not contain air, so they aren't easily damaged).

If your business requires a rough terrain forklift, it's not advisable to attempt to save money by purchasing a lower-rated piece of equipment. If your work will primarily be done outside and on rough terrain, and you require a large lifting capacity, you probably won't be pleased with the performance you get from a cheaper model. And not only will performance be an issue, but the forklift you buy probably will not hold up under the strain, even with careful maintenance. Instead, maybe you can save some cash by purchasing aused model from a respected dealer.
