Used Forklift
For business owners with their eye on the bottom line, buying a used forklift is a viable option for beginning or adding to an industrial fleet. However, there are a number of factors to keep in mind when buying a used forklift, to ensure that your purchase will actually end up saving you money in the long run.
Remember that buying a used forklift is much like buying a used car. Perhaps you want a particular brand that is known for its performance and safety standards, but can't afford to buy it new. The price of used forklifts can sometimes save you up to 50% off of the cost of new equipment, and the reasoning behind this makes good sense. Like a high quality car, the performance -- as well as the value of the equipment -- is likely to remain high for the most trusted brands.
When buying, find out the answers to the following questions:
* Will you be using the forklift minimally, or all day, every day? A used model might not be able to handle heavy, consistent work, particularly if it is an older model. * How was the forklift previously used and maintained? Ask to see maintenance records showing that the previous owners followed strict maintenance procedures. * Has the forklift been inspected by a skilled technician? If the forklift isn't functioning properly, the cost to operate the equipment per hour could cause your costs to be higher in the long run. * Does the dealer offer a preventative maintenance plan? These cover routine equipment checks, oil and filter changes, and transmission service at regular intervals. This is one advantage of buying from a certified dealer. * Does the dealer offer a full maintenance plan? A step beyond preventative maintenance, for a few dollars more you can sometimes buy coverage for repairs or equipment failure. * If this is an older (or discontinued) model, what is the availability of parts? You should get detailed specifications about the forklift itself, then make sure that parts will be readily available (make sure there are suppliers in your area) for service and repair.
Buying a used forklift can be a great money-saver for your business--but you should always do your homework. Make sure that in the end, your decision to buy used, vs. buying new or leasing, will be a true money saver.
